Heat Pump Rebates in Nova Scotia - 2025 Update | Discover Efficiency
Are you thinking of switching to a heat pump system for your home? If so, you may be eligible for various rebates and incentives from both the provincial and federal governments. These programs can help you save money on the upfront cost of installing a heat pump, as well as on your monthly energy bills. At Discover Efficiency, we can help you find and apply for the best rebates for your situation.
Nova Scotia Heat Pump Rebates
Nova Scotia has two programs for providing heat pump rebates:

Home Energy AssessmentA $199 Home Energy Assessment from Efficiency Nova Scotia is the best way to find out if you are able to qualify for a heat pump rebate through this program. The assessment can take up to 3 hours, where an Energy Advisor will review your home for insulation levels, air leakage, and mechanical systems. This assessment will not only show you if a heat pump is a worthwhile investment, but you will uncover other ways to make your home more energy efficient, saving you money in the long run.

If you have already purchased an eligible heat pump with the help of a contractor, then you still have opportunities for rebates. Efficiency NS offers rebates of up to $1,600 within 180 days of your heat pump installation. Not all units are eligible, but there is no in-home assessment is needed to qualify for this rebate.

Canadian Government Heat Pump Rebates
The federal government of Canada offers two main programs for homeowners who want to install heat pumps:
1. Canada Greener Homes Grant:
This federal grant for heat pumps provides grants of up to $5,000 to help you make energy-efficient retrofits to your home, such as heat pumps. You need to have a pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation to access the grant. You can also get a $600 reimbursement for the cost of the evaluations. You can apply for the grant online and find a registered energy advisor in your area.

Application Process:
-
Pre-Retrofit Energy Audit: Homeowners should first arrange for an energy audit through a registered service organization.
-
Select a Heat Pump Contractor: After receiving the audit report, homeowners can choose a licensed contractor to install the heat pump.
-
Submit Application: Once the installation is complete, residents can submit their application along with all required documentation, including receipts and proof of installation.

Eligibility Criteria:
To qualify for the grant, applicants must meet certain criteria:
-
Home Ownership: The applicant must be a homeowner and the property must be their primary residence.
-
Energy Audit Requirement: A pre-retrofit energy audit is required before any upgrades can be made. This audit will assess the home’s current energy efficiency and identify potential improvements.
-
Installation by Qualified Professionals: Heat pumps must be installed by a qualified contractor to ensure compliance with program standards and regulations.

2. Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) Program:
As of January 2025, the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) Program in Nova Scotia has undergone changes regarding the funding limits. The previous funding structure, which allowed eligible households to receive up to $30,000 ($15,000 from the federal government and $15,000 from the provincial government), has been revised.Currently, the program now offers a maximum grant of $10,000 for eligible applicants across Canada.
This change reflects a shift in the program's funding model, which aims to streamline support while still encouraging the transition from oil heating to heat pumps. However, Nova Scotia residents may still be eligible for additional provincial support that could bring the total funding back up to $15,000 depending on specific criteria and circumstances
Application Process:
Pre-register through the Canada Greener Homes Initiative to access up to $5,000 in federal support for replacing oil heating with heat pumps.
